Surprising Facts About SPF and Sunscreen

Your Makeup Isn’t Enough Protection

Product Nation

Many women wear make-up that contains an SPF. Often times, they may think they don’t also need to apply sunscreen because the make-up will protect them. This is another myth. While you may put your makeup on in the morning, you likely aren’t reapplying throughout the day. You’re also not spreading your makeup to every inch of your face or your neck. Makeup is applied much lighter than sunscreen and it may only cover certain spots. While the more SPF the better, makeup isn’t going to cut it as a UV protector. You can look at makeup as extra credit. It’s nice to have more but you need a full face of sunscreen in addition. For those hard to reach places like your eyelids and lips, there are newer products on the market that will protect there too. Some eyeshadows are now coming with SPF protection. Lip balms and chapsticks now also contain some sun fighting properties. When applying makeup, consider using sunscreen before you put it on. On days when you need to be dressed up but will be outside in the sun for a considerable amount of time, this can be very helpful. Apply a thick coat of sunscreen right before you apply your makeup and wait to apply as close to leaving the house as possible. When you get to your event you can lather some sunscreen on your neck, ears, arms, and hands and you should have a good barrier until it’s time to reapply. A hat and sunglasses can also help if you don’t want to reapply a chalky layer of sunscreen on top of your make up later in the day. A mineral spray sunscreen can help with that too.
