Laissez-Faire Leadership

The laissez-faire leadership style mainly involves having no agreed-upon leader. There are few circumstances where a pure laissez-faire leadership style will succeed.

Usually, it is best used in combination with other leadership styles. As an example, if you were managing a team of very capable and dependable people, you might still be the leader for each project. But each person under you is working in an area of expertise. By giving them the authority to make decisions in their expertise, you allow the project to advance more quickly with a high-quality result. Your job then becomes to coordinate between the different people working on the project. You are still in charge, but you don’t have to waste your time micro-managing.

In this way, a mix of laissez-faire and another leadership style, such as democratic or autocratic, can be used to achieve success. When only a laissez-faire model is used, it can often lead to confusion and frustration since there is no established leader to make final decisions or settle disputes.
