3. Cyclone Nargis
Starting on April 27, 2008, a cyclonic storm wreaked havoc on Burma and Sri Lanka. This storm alone caused the death of over 150,000 people and its aftermath, including the landslides and flooding it had caused, took more lives and resulted in over 50,000 people going missing. This category 4 tropical cyclone is the costliest cyclone to hit the Indian Ocean.
