1. Indian Ocean Tsunami

On December 26, 2004, while many people were finishing up the celebration of Christmas, countries along the Indian Ocean were experiencing the horror of a tsunami, caused by a massive earthquake earlier in the day. Waves grew as tall as 30 feets as they beat the shoreline of the coastal countries. This devastating tsunami yielded a death toll of 225,000 with more than 200,000 casualties reported in Indonesia alone. Countries hit by this tsunami also sustained environmental damage that ruined many of the countries' main industries.

5. California Wildfires-2018

This past wildfire season proved to be the deadliest and most devastating in California’s history. Over 8,000 wildfires caused destruction to at least 1.8 million acres of land. Over 100 people were killed in the fires and the damages caused were well over 3.5 billion dollars. The worst of the wildfire season occurred in August, with a national disaster being declared on August 4th, but a second round of wildfires caused even more damage in November, leaving 18,000 structures destroyed and 86 more people dead.
