When a client is booking an appointment, the receptionist should ask specific questions about the individual’s style preferences in order to match them with the best hairdresser for their needs. Hoare adds, “If you’re a new client going to a salon and you’re phoning up and they’re [the receptionist] just booking you in with the first person they mention, that’s a massive red flag for me. What I want to know is: Did they ask how I look after my hair? Did they ask if I want high maintenance or low maintenance? They’re all clues telling me about the client.”

They Offer Inconsistent Discounts

Hoare comments that salon managers cannot offer one discount to a specific client and not to another. It has to be an equal market. He adds, “I can’t discount my services and maintain consistency in the customer service experience I give you.” If the salon wants to offer a discount, it has to be made available to all clients, no matter what. That’s only fair. So, if you notice a salon offering inconsistent discounts, it’s best to stay away from their business practices.
