There’s no way around it: the coronavirus pandemic is sweeping the globe and it’s scary. And when people get scared, they tend to panic and seek answers on the cesspool that is their aunt’s Facebook page wherever they can. Pregnant women may be feeling especially vulnerable right now. So in an effort to dispel some of the misinformation out there, here is the basis of Everything Pregnant Women Need to Know About COVID-19.

Are pregnant women at higher risk of getting COVID-19?

According to the CDC, “We do not currently know if pregnant women have a greater chance of getting sick from COVID-19 than the general public.” However, while pregnant, women experience bodily changes that may increase their risk of some infections. That being said, it’s very important to take precautions, even if there’s no heightened risk of contracting coronavirus. There’s also nothing indicating that a pregnant woman who has contracted the virus will necessarily pass it on to her fetus. As of the time, this was written the CDC states that “No infants born to mothers with COVID-19 have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.”

Is a fetus at risk if the mother has Coronavirus?

Although so far the virus cannot be contracted by the fetus from the mother, there may be complications if the mother does get very sick. If the mother contracts Coronavirus and pneumonia this can cause respiratory issues and lead to premature labor and delivery. It is best to contact your doctor if you suspect any issues since this might not be the only one.

What do you do if you are pregnant and think you have Coronavirus?

First, call your Doctor, and establish a plan to avoid as much stress as possible. In order to avoid infections, the best option is to take all the necessary precautions. We can’t run from it, some of us will be infected. Don’t start panicking yet if you believe you’re amongst those who will be unlucky enough to get it. You need to go to the hospital if you’re having shortness of breath and fever so that they can monitor you better.

What preemptive measures do pregnant women need to take?

In order to avoid coronavirus, pregnant women need to take certain precautions, the good thing is that this is precautions that we should all be taking. This list the CDC provides on how to protect yourself:

  • Know how it spreads
  • Clean your hands often
  • Avoid close contact

What else should do pregnant women need to know?

It is best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So, take all the precautionary steps you can to avoid exposure to the virus, like, cleaning your hands often, avoiding close contact with people, and staying home. It is best to not take this pandemic lightly, this way you won’t be too late to act should anything go wrong. While we’re waiting for a resolution and eventually a vaccine, it is imperative that we take these precautions in order to stop the virus from spreading. You need to understand that we’re fighting this together as a global community.

Although it doesn’t seem like the pandemic is coming to an end anytime soon, at least pregnant women now know that they’re no more at risk than the average person. So, they don’t need to worry about that, seeing as they already have a lot on their plate.
